Materials from the EAN Event on 23rd September 2026: Temporary Accommodation have now been published in the Resources section of the Edinburgh Advice Network website. Key Themes and Learning

Discussion during the session highlighted a number of recurring issues affecting people in temporary accommodation including:


Affordability and Arrears Affordability was one of the most consistent concerns raised. Many residents struggle to understand the full costs associated with temporary accommodation, and delays in benefit claims, missed evidence requests and communication barriers can quickly result in arrears. Early advice, prompt reporting of changes and proactive engagement with the Temporary Accommodation Team were highlighted as important preventative measures.


Communication and Information Clear, accessible information is essential. Participants highlighted the need for straightforward guidance, translated materials and improved communication about rights, responsibilities and available support.


Long Stays in Temporary Accommodation A shortage of permanent housing means some households remain in temporary accommodation for extended periods. This can have significant impacts on wellbeing, stability and family life.


Impact of Location Accommodation may be located far from schools, employment, support services and family networks, creating additional pressures for residents.


Partnership Working Effective collaboration between housing, advice and support services is vital, particularly for people with complex or multiple needs. Strong referral pathways and joined-up support can make a significant difference.


Property Standards and Repairs Concerns were raised about property conditions, including damp, mould and repairs. Residents need clear routes for reporting issues and accessing support when problems are not resolved.
