New Report on Barriers to Employment for Ethnically Diverse Skilled Migrants

Nadia Aslam, Capital City Partnership, shares a new report which examines the structural barriers faced by ethnically diverse skilled migrants and brings together lived experience evidence from skilled ethnic minority professionals living in Edinburgh. She also reaches out to organisations to get involved with this work, with a Call to Action, and offers to arrange a presentation, discussion, or knowledge-sharing session on the topic.

Scotland continues to face skills shortages alongside demographic pressures, yet many highly qualified individuals from ethnic minority backgrounds remain unable to access employment that matches their education, skills, and professional experience. This mismatch represents both a significant equality challenge and a loss of economic potential.

This new report, prepared by Capital City Partnership as part of the Whole Family Equality Project, and Employer Engagement Project for Ethnic Minorities (EEPEM) examines the structural barriers and brings together lived experience evidence from skilled ethnic minority professionals living in Edinburgh.

Across all participants, barriers to employment were consistently reported,

demonstrating that challenges are systemic rather than individual. The evidence

highlights how policy frameworks, recruitment systems, organisational practices,

and workplace cultures interact to restrict access to employment, progression

opportunities, and long-term career stability.

Call to Action

We would be delighted to discuss the report and share its findings with organisations, networks, employers, policymakers, and community groups interested in addressing labour market inequalities and improving employment outcomes for ethnically diverse communities. Please feel free to get in touch if you would like to arrange a presentation, discussion, or knowledge-sharing session at nadia.aslam@capitalcitypartnership.org
