Kristee Boyd (City of Edinburgh Council), Secretary of the ESOL and Employability Edinburgh Subgroup, shares a new report by the group which explores Systemic Barriers ESOL Learners are facing in their Employability Journeys. It looks in particular at an interaction between college Bursary income and Universal Credit + Housing Benefit (for those in temporary accommodation), that can leave some learners worse off, and unable to afford to continue their ESOL journey.

Report: How ESOL learners are facing systemic barriers to their employability journeys
'I’m reaching out on behalf of the ESOL and Employability Subgroup, which is part of the wider ESOL Providers Forum in Edinburgh. Our subgroup Chair, The Welcoming Association’s Sandra Dargie, compiled the attached report, the final draft of which has now been signed off by subgroup members.
The report is entitled: How ESOL Learners are Facing Systemic Barriers to their Employability Journeys.
In our most recent ESOL and Employability Subgroup meeting, it was suggested that Edinburgh Advice Network members might find the content of the report useful in relation to your work with service users who are also ESOL learners.
With that in mind, I have attached a copy and hope it might be of interest to your members. Please do feel free to get in touch if you have any questions or comments.
The report has also recently been used, by one of our Edinburgh MPs, to write to the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions. We hope this will be a step in the right direction in terms of alleviating one of the major barriers currently experienced by many ESOL learners across Edinburgh and Scotland.'
